November 2024 update

Finance update

Wow, what a month! The - crypto-friendly - Trump win as well as a US stock heavy portfolio meant my net worth rocketed up this month by a massive £52k! This, combined with the gains from September (+£28k) and October (+£31k) means over the past three months the figure has gone up by a gigantic £113k!

Breakdown for November:

  • ISA up £10k
  • Pension up £14k
  • GIA/easy access savings up £5k
  • Crypto has shot the lights out, up £30k!
  • House price has gone down by just over £7k
Those eagle-eyed amongst you will notice I've not contributed much to anything apart from crypto this month (thankfully at the start!). I'm keeping the income from my wages in some savings accounts temporarily. Christmas is an expensive old time in our household, given we have 2 kids we obviously have the Christmas costs, but we also have their birthdays closely either side of Christmas as well! In addition there is 2xMOTs and services for both cars as well! Phew!

It's a very weird feeling having your investments go up this amount each month. For the past 3 months the gains made from investments has dwarfed my regular post-tax income (£13k vs £113!!). I'm conscious the markets (trad-fi AND crypto) have had a great few months, but I guess to a certain extent it highlights: a) the power of sticking to the plan b) the power of compounding and - most importantly - c) just how quickly momentum can build!

2024/25 tax year:

At the end of last October I was looking at +£90k for the year, after a fantastic November this is now at +£140k, with all areas in the green. In fact, my "risky" portfolio of 100% equities and a good old chunk in crypto has actually shown up just how poorly property has done this year, with the equity in my house only going up by £0.7k.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not of the mindset that a house you live in is a financial asset, it just hasn't been a good year for property this far in comparison to previous years. I'm not into BTL landlording, and given the recent announcements of stamp duty increases for 2nd homes this chalks up another reason in my "no" list.

Side hustle update:

It's also been a crazy month for my passive side hustle income, up £1500 in November to bring it to £5.5k for the year in passive tax free income, not bad! The biggest move of the dial has been my Interactive Investor referrals, receiving 7 x £200 for new referrals during November. A massive thank you for anyone who has registered on the platform using my link. I hope you enjoy the platform as much as I have done!

I moved to them at the start of the year having outgrown my Vanguard portfolio from both a stock picking point of view but also from a cost perspective. They also offered a good cashback incentive for me moving my portfolio over. Anything over a £90k portfolio on Vanguard and you'd be better off looking at a flat fee provider like Interactive Investor.

Currently I have the bulk of my pension, the bulk of my ISA portfolio as well as both children's ISAs on the platform. Around £400k across these pots, and the fee is only £22 a month. This works out at a crazy platform fee of 0.066%!

If you're interested in switching/joining Interactive Investor my referral link is below where you'll get the first year for free.

Non-Finance update

  • Lego 'Brick Borrow' - For the past couple of months we have been subscribed to a service where you borrow Lego, build it and return it and have been having a great time! It costs £15 a month and £5 for every set that you get, so if you enjoy building it, playing with it and then moving on it is fantastic and works out very cost effective. We have just borrowed a set worth £95 and have just ordered one worth £115. If you're interested then there's a referral code of "74EE6F5" which will get you a 2nd order for free, saving a fiver. Check out the site here: https://www.brickborrow.com/
  • Drone - I've taken the drone out plenty of times this month, getting some fantastic winter landscapes, some pictures below!

That's it, that's the update.
Until next time!

Also I'm not sure whether it is mainly due to "millionaire" status not being the same as it was when I was young (thanks inflation/money printing! #BitcoinSolvesThis ), or whether it is testament to our concerted saving and investing over the past few years, probably a mix of both. Either way I'm extremely proud of what me and wife have achieved, and...

S&S ISA +£7k Pension +£5k Long term net worth trend, cumulative: Long term net worth trend, broken down: Monthly net worth difference: Pension news: Some of you know that I moved jobs recently, this spurred me on to take a closer look at my old workplace pension with the aim of moving it away from Aviva and onto a lower cost platform. I was extremely surprised to find that my Aviva pension has a protected pension age (PPA) of 55!  This effectively means it is immune to any planned increases in the coming years. It is looking likely that this age will be increased to 57 from 2028 and could well hit 60+ in the future. For s...
